Russia: Nuclear Accident Victim's Condition Deteriorating

Moscow, 18 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - A Russian government researcher who received a potentially fatal dose of radiation during a nuclear experiment yesterday is reported to to be in extremely serious condition today.

A spokesman for the Ministry for Atomic Energy (unnamed) said Alexander Zakharov's condition is seriously deteriorating following an accident during an experiment at Nizhny Novgorod in central Russia. Officials blame it on human error.

Yesterday doctors at the Moscow clinic where Zakharov is being treated said they believed that experience gained after the Chornobyl nuclear accident could help them heal him.
