Europe: Clinton Plans Visit To Capitals After Madrid Summit

Washington, 25 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - U.S. President Bill Clinton plans to visit other European capitals after a NATO summit in Madrid next month.

Our correspondent says the White House is expected to announce his itinerary this week. A White House spokesman said decisions on the trip are still being finalized. He said Clinton will go to the Danish capital of Copenhagen and other stops are under consideration.

There is press speculation in Europe that Clinton may visit Warsaw and perhaps Bucharest after the Madrid summit which ends on July 9.

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea was at the State Department yesterday for talks with Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott, their second meeting in a week. But there was no official comment on their talks afterwards.

Clinton's visit to Copenhagen was initially scheduled to follow a U.S-Russian summit in Helsinki in late March but was postponed when he injured his knee. U.S. officials say relations with the Baltic countries are likely to dominate the agenda in Copenhagen.
