Moscow/Cape Canaveral, 25 June 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Space officials say the crew of two Russians and an American aboard the space station Mir are not in danger after a cargo ship carrying supplies hit one of Mir's six modules today.
The accident caused loss of air pressure in the struck module. But a spokeswoman for the Russian Mission Control Center says the damage poses no immediate threat to the Mir's crew.
The cargo ship Progress hit the Russian space station earlier today as the Mir's crew was using manual controls to practice docking procedures. The crew was redocking the cargo ship after disconnecting it from the Mir yesterday.
A spokesman for the U.S. Space Agency NASA, Doug Ward, said the crew has been able to seal off the damaged compartment. NASA officials say there are no plans for the crew to abandon the Mir. The space station includes an escape Soyuz capsule for use in any evacuation emergency.
