Washington, 8 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - President Askar Akayev of Kyrgyzstan is due in the United States tomorrow on a one-week working visit to improve bilateral ties and sign at least two agreements.
An official of the Kyrgyz embassy in Washington, Second Secretary Erkin Atabekov, told our correspondent that Akayev will also have talks at the White House with Vice President Al Gore and possibly President Bill Clinton next week on Tuesday.
He said Akayev has no special agenda but will discuss the situation in Central Asia and the full range of bilateral relations.
Akayev was last in Washington in 1993 and since then both he and Clinton have been elected to second terms in office.
Akayev is expected in New York tomorrow and is scheduled to be in Washington on Friday. He will have meetings with top officials at the International Monetary Fund and next week sign a credit agreement with the U.S. Export-Import Bank and have meetings at the World Bank.
Atabekov said that during his visit, Akayev will also meet other top U.S. trade officials and sign a cooperation agreement for academic exchanges with a local university.
