Ukraine: New Air Service With Canada Begins

Ottawa, 18 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Canada and Ukraine have a new Air Transport Agreement that will -- for the first time -- allow each country's national airline to operate in the other.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy says it is a positive further development in Canada's overall bilateral relations with Ukraine. He said the new air service will reinforce family ties, favor cultural exchanges and contribute to growth in trade and tourism.

Ukrainian airlines will operate regular flights to Toronto with an option to expand service to a second Canadian city. In return, Air Canada will fly into Kyiv in co-operation with a European partner. The agreement goes into effect immediately.
