Bratislava, 22 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - The Hungarian Foreign Affairs Ministry has confirmed that Hungary's Foreign Minister Laszlo Kovacs invited Slovak Foreign Minister Zdenka Kramplova to Budapest on an official visit this fall.
Ministry spokesman Gabor Horvath said Kovacs issued the invitation yesterday during a meeting in the Slovak town of Komarno. The exact date is undetermined.
Horvath said the ministers made apparent progress yesterday on a proposed committee on implementing a Hungarian-Slovak treaty. Hungary insists that ethnic Hungarians living in Slovakia be represented. Horvath said that the Slovak side offered a new proposal that ethnic Hungarians be included as consultants on relevant issues, but not as members.
Horvath said the Hungarians consider the proposal a step forward, and have asked that it be presented in writing.
