Yerevan, 15 September 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Armenia's top presidential adviser, Gherard Libaridyan, resigned from his post today.
He had served as an adviser to President Levon Ter-Petrossian since 1989.
At a Yerevan press conference where he made his announcement, he cited family reasons for his resignation, saying he wants to join his family in the United States.
Libaridian was actively engaged in the Nagorno-Karabakh negotiating process and held several separate meetings with Azeri presidential adviser Vafa Guluzade.
Libaridian also met Turkish officials to discuss the possibility of establishing formal diplomatic relations between the two countries. Libaridian was the most senior official in the present Armenian leadership who was a diaspora Armenian and naturalized U.S. citizen.
