Ottawa, 10 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - Canadian authorities say an accused Nazi collaborator who was stripped of his Canadian citizenship has slipped out of the country on his own.
Ladislaus Csizsik-Csatary was to be deported to Hungary. However, Paul Vickery, head of the Canadian Justice Department's war crimes unit, says that when officials went to Csizsik-Csatary's home in Toronto last week, his daughter said he was now living in Europe. Vickery says his name will be placed on a watch list and he will be barred from re-entering Canada.
Csizsik-Csatary was a member of the Royal Hungarian Police and accused of the confinement and deportation to concentration camps of thousands of Jews. He was convicted in absentia for war crimes in 1948 and sentenced to death. He arrived in Canada in 1949 and became a citizen in 1955.
Canada revoked his citizenship in August for having made false claims about his past.
