Poland: Parties Reach Deal On Coalition

Warsaw, 20 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - Poland's Solidarity center-right bloc (AWS) and the centrist Freedom Union (UW) today reached an agreement on parliamentary and government coalition.

AWS's leader Marian Krzaklewski told reporters shortly before the parliament's inaugural session that a full agreement on the program was signed and a political deal was initialed by representatives of the two groups.

The AWS won the post of speaker in the lower house of parliament (Sejm) and is to get the same post in the upper house (Senate).

It has also been reported in the Polish media that AWS would control several economic resorts and social affairs ministries. The UW is to take over finance and foreign affairs as well as defense and justice. The listing of all government posts is to be made public later in the week.
