Kabul, 12 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - A United Nations special advisor on gender issues has arrived in Kabul in an effort to help Afghan women cope with the strict Islamic rules they must now live under.
The advisor, Angela King, said on arrival that she wanted to develop a set of practical guidelines for Afghan women who must now wear veils and are barred from most jobs and access to education. The Afghan capital was seized a year ago by the Taliban, which has imposed strict Islamic law.
King also said that she would examine the Afghan operations of the UN, which have come into conflict on occasion with the Taliban.
Earlier today, The UN Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said that one of its employees had been publicly flogged in the country by Taliban officials for no specific reason. UNICEF said the incident occured last Saturday in the city of Jalalabad, in eastern Afghanistan.
