Bucharest, 17 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - Ukraine, Romania and Moldova have signed an agreement pledging to fight organized crime, terrorism, arms smuggling and illegal drug trafficking.

The document was signed Friday in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau by the Internal Affairs ministers of the three countries -- Yuri Kravcenko, Gavril Dejeu and Mihai Plamadeala. They all acknowledged that in their countries crime has climbed to a dangerous level.

Plamadeala said that Moldova's separatist Transdniestr region is a fertile area for organized crime because the region is not under Chisinau's control.
