Yugoslavia: Situation In Kosovo Worsens For Serbs

Pristina, 5 August 1999 (RFE/RL) - The United Nations refugee agency says the situation for minority Serbs in Kosovo continues to worsen, with NATO-led forces failing to reverse their steady departure from the province in the face of revenge attacks by ethnic Albanians. Officials of the UN War Crimes Tribunal yesterday warned Kosovo's ethnic Albanians from making retaliatory attacks on Serbs. Serbian opposition leader Vuk Draskovic denounced the international community's failure to protect Kosovo's Serbs, saying the situation was helping Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. Draskovic said it was difficult to convince Serbs that their government should be more like those in the United States or western Europe when Serbs continue to be attacked in the presence of NATO-led forces.
