Trencianske Teplice, Slovakia; 20 April 20000 (RFE/RL) - A special police unit this morning detained former Slovak Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar. Masked police officers used explosives to gain access to Meciar's home in the Slovak spa town of Trencianske Teplice after repeated unsuccessful attempts to serve a warrant in connection with charges of his having made illegal payments to members of his cabinet.
Eyewitnesses say Meciar did not put up any resistance and was not handcuffed.
Investigators also want to interrogate Meciar in connection with the kidnapping of the son of former president Michal Kovac. Meciar has not been charged in the kidnapping case.
