Yerevan, 3 May 2000 (RFE/RL) - Armenian President Robert Kocharian was
quoted by his press office today as saying many of the ministers from the
outgoing cabinet will retain their posts in the new government. Kocharian sacked Prime Minister Aram Sarkisian and Defense Minister
Vagarshak Harutiunian yesterday saying some members of the government were
involved in intrigues against him.
An expected meeting between Kocharian and the parliamentary majority today did not take place. Kocharian has 20 days to name his choice for a new prime minister.
Meanwhile, some members of the pro-Sarkisian Miasnutyun bloc continue to voice support for the ousted prime minister and have rejected talks with Kocharian on a possible successor.
