Bosnia: UN Says New Figures Indicate Progress In Refugees Return

Sarajevo, 22 December 2000 (RFE/RL) -- The United Nations refugee agency today said that new registration figures for Bosnian Muslim, Serb and Croat refugees showed their numbers have declined significantly in the five years since the 1992-1995 ended. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said registrations of displaced people have fallen to just over half a million, from the almost 850,000 estimated in 1996, indicating some success in returning refugees to their homes.

The UNHCR has been trying to help people return to the homes they left during the war, which uprooted more than two million people.
