Yugoslavia: Serb Official Says KFOR Arrested Albanian Guerrilla Leader

Belgrade, 2 January 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Bozo Prelevic, one of Serbia's three Interior Ministers, says that international peacekeepers (KFOR) have arrested a leader of an ethnic Albanian guerrilla group operating in southern Serbia. Prelevic today was quoted by the Beta news agency as saying the KFOR had arrested Muhamet Xhemaili, the commander of the northerly group of ethnic Albanian guerrillas fighting as the self-styled Liberation Army of Presevo.

Prelevic said Xhemaili had been arrested at a KFOR checkpoint situated on the administrative border with Kosovo.

In a recent interview with reporters, Xhemaili rejected the idea of any peace talks with Belgrade.
