Croatia: Zagreb Joins Bid To Extradite Milosevic

London, 2 March 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Croatia has given the International War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague hundreds of pages of material to help the court bring Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic to trial on charges of genocide. Croatia's UN envoy, Ivan Simonovic, said the government had filed a full set of legal arguments showing violations of the UN's genocide convention by Milosevic and his associates between 1991 and 1995.

Simonovic said he hoped this will help bring Milosevic to justice. He called on Belgrade to hand the former Yugoslav leader over to the tribunal.

After Croatia seceded from Yugoslavia in 1991, the country's Serbian minority rebelled, backed by the Yugoslav army. The conflict cost thousands of lives. Fighting ended in 1995.
