Macedonia: Grenade Explodes Near Ethnic Albanian Leader's Offices

Skopje, 28 August 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Police in the Macedonian capital Skopje reported that attackers today threw a hand grenade at the offices of an ethnic Albanian party leader, damaging the building but causing no injuries. Police spokesman Voislav Zafirovski said the grenade exploded near the offices of the Democratic Union for Integration, the party recently founded by former rebel leader Ali Ahmeti.

Zafirovski said it was not known if the party was the target of the attack, but he noted that two other party offices in Skopje were hit by stones overnight.

In a separate development, police said they have charged three ethnic Albanians with the drive-by shooting of two policemen earlier this week. Authorities said the suspects are former rebels of the ethnic Albanian insurrection last year.
