Tbilisi, 29 November 2002 (RFE/RL) -- A senior official says Georgia has decided to extradite three Chechen rebels who were among a group of alleged militants detained this summer. Paata Mskhiladze, an official from the Prosecutor-General's Office, said the Chechens will be informed of the decision today and will have the right to appeal.
The three are among a group of eight Chechens that Russia wants extradited. Georgia says it is considering the extradition requests on a case-by-case basis.
The eight were among a group of alleged Chechen militants detained by Georgian forces while crossing the Georgian-Russian border this summer. Georgia already has deported five members of that larger group. It said it will prosecute in its own courts two more who were found to be Georgian citizens.
Russia has been insisting on the quick handover of the Chechens.
