Iraq: U.S. Releases Photos Of Hussein's Sons

Baghdad, 24 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The U.S. military has released photos showing the bloodied faces of Saddam Hussein's sons, Uday (pictured left) and Qusay (pictured right), in an effort to prove they were killed in a gun battle with U.S. forces in northern Iraq this week. The photographs were immediately broadcast by Western news stations and two Arab satellite television networks widely viewed in Iraq.

Earlier today, some members of Iraq's U.S.-backed Governing Council were shown the brothers' bodies, which are being stored at Baghdad International Airport.

Former Iraqi Foreign Minister Adnan Pachachi, a member of the Governing Council, said he believes the killing of the two brothers in Mosul on 22 July could hasten the end of daily attacks on U.S.-led forces in Iraq.

Pachachi said during a visit to London: "There is a feeling that their [Qusay and Uday's] death will hasten the end of the acts of violence which have been perpetrated recently. Also, there would be a feeling that, perhaps, the next target will be Saddam himself."

Three soldiers from the U.S. 101st Airborne Division were killed in Iraq today when their convoy was ambushed by small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades near Mosul. Soldiers from the 101st Airborne were involved in the gun battle that killed Hussein's sons.
