Tehran, 5 August 2003 (RFE/RL) -- An Iranian court today said that two people arrested during recent demonstrations in Shiraz are guilty of "warring against God" -- a penalty punishable by death, amputation, or exile. The Iranian daily "Abrar" quoted local judiciary chief Hossein Ali Amiri as disclosing the verdict. Amiri said the cases of the two men will be transferred to the Supreme Court.
Earlier today, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised an amnesty for students who were detained during a recent wave of political protests in Iran. It remains unclear whether the amnesty will only apply to repentant students or to all those detained.
Hundreds of students were detained in June and July during protests calling for the resignation of the government and greater political freedom.
