Bosnia-Herzegovina: Over 100 Bodies Removed From Mass Grave

Sarajevo, 16 August 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Forensic experts have recovered the remains of over 100 people from a mass grave in eastern Bosnia-Herzegovina that may be the largest burial site from the country's 1992-95 war Murat Hurtic, a member of the Bosnian Muslim commission for missing people, said today that the experts have found 94 complete skeletons and 34 detached body parts.

Teams have been at work since late last month unearthing the 40 meter long grave in the mountainous countryside near the eastern town of Zvornik.

The grave is believed to contain around 500 bodies of civilians from the area.

Hurtic said the experts had found some personal documents of the victims showing that they were Muslim civilians from Zvornik. They are thought to have been executed when Bosnian Serb forces captured the town at the outbreak of the war.
