Vienna, 15 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov (pictured) today called on the U.S. to make changes to its draft UN resolution on Iraq, but stopped short of saying he would veto the current draft. Ivanov says he hopes the U.S. will include the six amendments submitted by Russia, France, and Germany. The U.S. rejected previous demands by the countries for a clear timetable for the transfer of authority to the Iraqis and an expanded UN role in the reconstruction.
U.S. Ambassador to the UN John Negroponte said the United States has made every effort possible to take into account the views of other countries. It will call for a vote later today.
The United States needs a minimum nine Security Council votes to secure the passage of its resolution.
