Vilnius, 3 December 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Lithuanian parliamentarians today started drafting a formal text to impeach President Rolandas Paksas. Lawmakers are quoted as saying the impeachment declaration could be presented to parliament next week, after which lawmakers will seek the signatures needed to launch impeachment proceedings.
Meanwhile, Paksas is to stand tomorrow at a public hearing at the Constitutional Court over an alleged relationship with Russian businessman Jurijus Borisovas, who is accused of selling arms to Sudan and of having ties with Russian gangsters.
Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas again called on Paksas to resign "without waiting for the beginning of the impeachment procedure."
But Paksas denies all charges of wrongdoing and says that he is a victim of those who want to destroy him morally and politically.
