Police Probe Assault On Russian School Teacher

NOVOSIBIRSK, Russia -- Police in the west Siberian city of Novosibirsk have launched an investigation into the beating of a school teacher, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The female teacher was beaten by a man in front of elementary class pupils on December 3.

The suspected assailant was officially asked not to leave the city until the investigation is complete. Novosibirsk police officials say that the suspect did not show up for interrogation on December 4. His current whereabouts are unknown. According to the police, law enforcement officers are currently looking for him.

The victim, elementary class teacher Irina Isayeva, has submitted her resignation without specifying the reason for her decision.

It is the second case of assault on a teacher in Russia in the last month. In November, a female teacher was severely beaten by a male assailant in front of her class in St. Petersburg. That case is still being investigated.
