Iran's nuclear supremo Ali Akbar Salehi formally took office on December 18 as the Islamic Republic's new foreign minister following his predecessor's sacking by President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.
Salehi has been named as caretaker foreign minister in place of Manuchehr Mottaki, who was removed from his post on December 13 while on an official trip to Senegal.
Iranian media reported that Salehi will be an interim appointment until parliament officially approves his appointment, as required under Iran's laws. He will continue to head Iran's atomic energy agency.
