Israeli, Lebanese Soldiers Exchange Fire Near Border

Israeli and Lebanese soldiers have exchanged fire on the countries' shared border.

The two armies blamed each other for the incident.

The Israeli military said a Lebanese soldier opened fire on Israeli troops carrying out work on a border fence. The Israeli soldiers then returned the fire, it said.

A Lebanese army official said Lebanese soldiers opened fire only when Israeli troops crossed the border.

There were no reports of injuries.

The incident occurred close to the border town of Kiryat Shmona.

In 2006, Israel fought a devastating 34-day war in Lebanon against Hizballah guerrillas.

The border has been mostly quiet since, but there have been occasional flare-ups of violence.

In August 2010, two Lebanese soldiers, one Lebanese journalist, and an Israeli officer were killed in an exchange of fire on the border.
