Crusading Anti-Kremlin Ecologist Ventures Into Politics

Russian ecologist Yevgenia Chirikova is preparing to run for mayor of Khimki, a small town outside of Moscow. Chirikova and her organization, the Khimki Forest Defenders, are battling the construction of a highway through the forest, and she has become a leading figure in protests against President Vladimir Putin. Her chances of winning the Khimki mayor's seat, however, appear slim. (RFE/RL's Russian Service)
