A suicide bomber has struck hear NATO headquarters in Kabul, killing at least six people.
Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said at least five other people were wounded.
The explosion took place outside the Afghan Film Institute in the capital, where the headquarters for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the U.S. Embassy, and other diplomatic missions are located.
"As we could see, several children who were working in the area as street vendors were among the victims of today's attack," Kabul's deputy police chief, Daud Amin, told RFE/RL.
"We don't exactly know what the aim of the attack was, but because a number of special events are taking place in Kabul today, they apparently could not succeed in targeting today's events due to tight security arrangements, and [the suicide bomber] couldn't get near the ISAF compound and eventually blew himself up in this area."
An eyewitness said many of the victims were " were locals, including children. [I saw] four or five little girls lying on the ground among them."
The attack took place as government dignitaries assembled in Kabul to mark 11 years since the death of anti-Taliban commander Ahmad Shah Masud two days before the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States.
