Appeals judges at the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague have acquitted two Croatian generals convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity and ordered their immediate release. Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac had been sentenced to 24 and 18 years, respectively, in 2011 for their roles in a 1995 military offensive to drive Serb rebels out of Krajina, a Croatian region bordering Bosnia.
