A Ukrainian court sentenced a former police general, Oleksiy Pukach, to life in prison for the 2000 murder of journalist Heorhiy Gongadze. Then-President Leonid Kuchma has been accused of involvement in the killing of Gongadze, whose decapitated body was found outside Kyiv. Responding at his sentencing on January 29, Pukach said he would acknowledge his sentence only if Kuchma and former Kuchma aide and current lawmaker Volodymyr Lytvyn "are here with me."
