Several thousand Turkish demonstrators amassed on streets surrounding Istanbul's central Taksim Square on June 1 in the fiercest antigovernment protests for years. The protests came a day after police fired tear gas and water cannon at demonstrators in central Istanbul, wounding scores of people and prompting rallies in other cities against Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's ruling AK Party government.
