President Vladimir Putin said on June 7 that Russia is ready to replace peacekeepers from Austria in the disputed Golan Heights. Putin made the comment after Vienna said it will recall its troops from a UN monitoring force due to intensified fighting near the Golan Heights. Austria, whose peacekeepers account for about 380 of the 1,000-strong UN force in the Golan Heights observing a 40-year-old cease-fire between Syria and Israel, said it would pull out after intense clashes between Syrian government forces and rebels on the border.
