Five same-sex Russian couples sought to register as married couples at an office in St. Petersburg, but were turned away by officials citing legislation that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. Same-sex marriage is legal in 15 countries, including seven in Western Europe, but is not recognized in Russia. Lawmakers recently passed legislation barring same-sex foreign couples from adopting Russian children. (Reuters)
