A porous gel embedded with silver nanoparticles could be used to purify water in emergencies. Malaysian doctoral student Siew-Leng Loo provided this video of the results of her team's research, showing the spongelike gel being squeezed to release purified water. The gel sucks up the water again when the pressure is released.
