Salkynai Alimbaeva, the wife of jailed Kyrgyz opposition politician Ravshan Jeenbekov, was sent to pretrial detention for two months on May 26 on corruption charges. A court in Bishkek pronounced the ruling one day after Alimbaeva’s detainment on charges related to the alleged illegal purchase of two parcels of land in Bishkek last year. Alimbaeva pleaded not guilty. Alimbaeva's husband was arrested along with more than 20 opposition politicians, activists, and journalists in October over their protest against a controversial border deal with Uzbekistan.
