Police have said the governor of Afghanistan's northern Konduz Province was among 20 worshippers killed in a bomb attack at a mosque.
Konduz Governor Mohammad Omar was attending prayers at a mosque in neighboring Takhar Province, where the blast occurred.
Another 35 people were injured.
Police say it appears the bomb had been planted in the mosque.
Takhar Governor Abdul Jabar Taqwa said the bomb was meant to kill Omar, who was originally from Takhar and regularly attended Friday Prayers in Taliqan, the provincial capital.
Omar had surviced at least two previous assassination attempts, including a roadside bomb just two months ago.
