Ahmadinejad Meets Syrian Leader In Damascus

Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad

Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad is in Syria, where he held talks with that country's leader, Bashar al-Assad.

The meeting come two days after Assad held discussions with a U.S. envoy about the possibility of renewing peace negotiations with Israel.

The official Syrian news agency gave no details about the meeting, but one Syrian political commentator claimed the talks suggest the United States has failed to drive a wedge between the two countries.

Ahmadinejad last visited Syria in February, shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington was hoping to see Syria move away from Iran.

From Damascus, the Iranian leader travels to Algeria and the New York, where he is due to attend the United Nations General Assembly from September 20-22.
