At least 30 people have been killed and 50 wounded in a series of suicide bombings in Kandahar in southern Afghanistan.
Afghan officials say a prison appeared to be the main target, but no prisoners had escaped as happened there in a similar attack in 2008.
Ahmed Wali Karzai -- a member of the Kandahar provincial council and half brother of the country's president -- said two of the explosions occurred near his home, which was not damaged.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombings, saying on their website that it was a "message" to NATO commanders planning a large operation there.
