Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard has made a previously unannounced visit to Afghanisten, during which she held talk with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Her office said in a statement on October 3 that she pledged to continue to support the U.S.-led mission in Afghanistan.
She also met U.S. General David Petraeus in Kabul, with whom she discusssed plans for transferring responsibility for security in Afghanistan to Afghan forces.
Gillard also visited Australian troops in southern Uruzgan Province, on what is her first overseas trip as the nation's leader.
