Azeri Minister Withdraws Lawsuit Against Rights Activist

Leyla Yunus

Azerbaijan's interior minister, Ramil Usubov, has withdrawn his lawsuit against human rights defender Leyla Yunus.

The suit was filed over comments Yunus made in a recent interview, in which Usubov says she compared Azerbaijani police methods and actions with those of police in Nigeria and Mexico.

Yunus is the director of the Baku-based Peace and Democracy Institute.

The lawsuit, filed in Yasamal District Court in Baku, was closed today and journalists were not allowed into the hearing.

Yunus told RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service that she is satisfied with the minister's decision but says she could not understand why the hearing was held behind closed doors.
