Belarusian Opposition Urges Mourning Day For Victims Of Plant Blast

A funeral for a victim of the Pinsk explosion

MINSK -- The leader of Belarus's opposition For Liberty movement, Alyaksandr Milinkevich, today called for a day of mourning for the victims of a deadly factory explosion, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

The death toll from last week's explosion at a plywood plant in the southwestern town of Pinsk rose today to 14 with many others injured, some of them severely.

The accident on October 25 was caused by the explosion of two boilers in the plant's workshop, which caused a glass ceiling to collapse on workers.

Milinkevich called on President Alyaksandr Lukashenka to designate November 2 as a day of mourning.

The Belarusian authorities have not yet responded to Milinkevich's appeal.
