An explosion in the middle of a Serb protest in Kosovo's ethnically divided town of Mitrovica has killed one person and injured 11.

The incident occurred as some 1,000 Serbs gathered to protest the opening of a Kosovo government civil registry office in the Serb-dominated part of the town.

Kosovo police said they believe a grenade was thrown amid the protesters.

Doctors said one person died in the hospital from his wounds.

Belgrade and Kosovo Serbs oppose the independence the majority ethnic Albanian Kosovo declared from Serbia in 2008.
