Car Blast Kills Two In Daghestan

MOSCOW -- Two people were reported killed overnight in Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Daghestan when their car believed packed with explosives blew up.

Russian news agencies reports said one other person was injured in the blast in the western Khasavyurt region.

The reports cited unnamed security officials as saying they believed the explosives that were in the car went off accidentally.

On March 31, 12 people were killed in twin suicide bombings in Daghestan's town of Kizlyar after deadly attacks in Moscow on March 29 killed 39 people.

In a video posted on an Islamist website, Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov claimed responsibility for the Moscow attacks.

Umarov said the twin suicide bombings in the Russian capital were a response to crimes committed by Russian security forces against Chechen civilians and vowed that attacks will continue.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, whose government has mobilized amid signs of continuing attacks, has said the Moscow and Kizlyar bombings could have been planned by the same group.

Russia is holding funerals today for some of the victims of the Moscow attacks.
