U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called on Arab countries to offer more support to the Palestinians, reach out to Israel, and stop arming militants to foster Middle East peace.
In a speech to the American Jewish Committee, Clinton repeated U.S. accusations that Syria has transferred arms to Hizballah in Lebanon, and said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was "making decisions that could mean war or peace for the region."
Clinton also said the United States is trying to give Iran a choice of reining in its nuclear program and benefitting from normal ties or "increased isolation and painful consequences."
She said a nuclear-armed Iran would greatly destabilize the region.
It was Clinton's third speech on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in two months.
It comes amid recent tensions between the United States and close ally Israel.
