MAKHACHKALA, Daghestan -- The deputy prosecutor in Daghestan's capital of Makhachkala has been shot dead by two unknown assailants, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Maksud Maksudov was shot as he was getting into his car near his house and died at the scene.
Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Russian Prosecutor-General's Investigative Committee, told RFE/RL that a criminal case has been opened with several charges.
Maksudov was in charge of monitoring jails and prisons in Daghestan.
Scores of government officials, police, and insurgents have been killed this year in Daghestan, which has become one of the most volatile republics in Russia's North Caucasus region, along with Ingushetia and Chechnya.
