MAKHACHKALA -- The republican interior minister in the southern Russian Republic of Daghestan, Lieutenant General Adilgirey Magomedtagirov, has been killed by an unknown gunman, RFE/RL's Russian Service reported.
Law enforcement and security service troops have launched an effort to locate the killer.
Reuters reported that Magomedtagirov was gunned down as he entered a restaurant in the Daghestani capital, Makhachkala.
The same agency said two other people were injured in the attack.
Magomedtagirov was unhurt but two members of his personal bodyguard were killed in Makhachkala in February 2007 when their car was blown up as they accompanied him to investigate the site of a fatal attack on an Interior Ministry official.
He had survived another attempt on his life in mid-2006 that was blamed on the Daghestan Jamaat.
