EU Commission Backs Estonia's 2011 Eurozone Entry

The European Commission has backed Estonia's plan to adopt the euro in 2011.

The Estonian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website that the commission "evaluated Estonia's readiness to adopt the euro and proposed that Estonia join the eurozone in 2011."

EU finance ministers will have to formally approve the measure at a meeting in July.

Estonia is the first ex-Soviet state to get the go-ahead to join the 16-country eurozone.
