EU Suspends Legal Action Against France Over Roma

EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding

BRUSSELS -- EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding has said the bloc's executive will "for the time being" suspend legal action threatened against France for its expulsion of Romanian and Bulgarian Roma.

Reding's statement comes after France on October 15 handed over detailed plans to bring its legislation into conformity with the European Union's 2004 free-movement directive.

Last month, Reding evoked a parallel between the expulsions and Nazi conduct during World War II, drawing an angry response from Paris at an EU summit.
