Officials say a strong earthquake which hit eastern Turkey today killed at least 51 people.
The epicenter of the quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0, was in Elazig Province, some 550 kilometers east of the capital, Ankara.
The government crisis center said the quake injured about 100 people and destroyed houses in at least six small villages in Elazig.
Turkey's Kandilli seismology center said there were some 30 aftershocks. The earthquake was felt in the neighboring provinces of Tunceli, Bingol, and Diyarbakir, where residents fled to the streets in panic and spent the night outdoors.
A magnitude 4.2 quake was also recorded in Greece today. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damages.
